Branch. and Saturday October 22, 10am - noon at the Buder Branch
Disability Culture Rap
This bold and controversial 20 minute film mixes artistic expression,
politics, and humor to move audiences to a deeper understanding of
disability from a minority and cultural perspective.
Where We Can Read the Wind, an anthology of art and writing by Missourians
with disabilities
Readings from the recently published anthology will be followed with a
discussion about disability culture. Artists from the anthology will also
share their work. Presented in collaboration with Paraquad and VSA
Missouri. (An interpreter will be provided.
There are many other activities available to the public to recognize
Disability History and Awareness Month.
1. The Governor's Council on Disability is featuring a group of
individuals with disabilities from the State of Missouri on the Disability
Web Portal
<http://custapp.marketvolt.com/link/8urBKXkGdh?CM=251304963&X=96648594> .
2. The Governor's Council on Disability will also be sponsoring a display
on the 2nd and 4th floors of the Truman Building (301 West High Street,
Jefferson City) in honor of Disability History and Awareness Month, National
Disability Employment Awareness Month, and Disability Mentoring Day.
Schedule time to see the display if you visit Jefferson City.
3. The St. Louis Public Library has scheduled several events:
Movie & Discussion - October 6, 4-6pm at Julia Davis Branch
Radio
Based on a true story, this thoughtful film follows the unusual relationship
between a high school football coach and Radio, a mentally challenged man.
Radio was long the target of jokes by the community, but attitudes change
when he grows with the coach's guidance.
Disability Awareness - October 15, 2-3pm at the Walnut Park Branch and
October 22, 2-3pm at the Schlafly Branch
Paraquad provides an educational and informational presentation on living
with all types of disabilities. The organization's programs and services are
guided by the independent living philosophy, the belief that people with
disabilities should integrate fully into society, have equal opportunities,
and maintain control over their lives.
(Anthony Perkins & Norrell Powell share the story of their disability.)
