I found these 5 Keys for Advocating" that I wrote down at the 2010 MCB
convention, during a break-out session with our ACB President, Mitch
Pomerantz as speaker. It was a very informative session, and I want to
share these tips with you that he gave us. Maybe this will help some of you
for Washington D.C. and Legislative Days in Jeff City. I am soory I can't
attend, but wish you all the best in your advocacy adventure!! See the 5
keys below my name.

5 Keys for Advocating

1. Be a responsible advocate. Do what you can legally. Know the law.
Pick your battles.

2. Be as knowledgeable as possible regarding the subject. Do your
homework; never fake it. (ADA requires equal access, but not a leg up) Find
out who will respond to your issue(s).Do your research. (Talking to your
mayor is one example of a way to get research.)

3. Be prepared to compromise - Keep in mind the ideal (of what you want),
but decide what you'll settle for.

4. Do not be intimidated!!! Keep your cool.

5. Dress appropriately - it maintains credibility. Look the part of a
serious advocate. You need to let your colleagues know if they are not
dressed appropriately. (Business casual - pantsuit, blazer/skirt, cress,
etc. Hair needs to be clean and tidy)
