SUBJECT: ACCESSIBLE WORLD PRESENTS A JOURNEY THROUGH HISTORY ON TUESDAY FEBRUARY 7, 2012 REVIEWING LETTERS FROM NUREMBERG
NEWSWIRE:
Last evening, everyone who read justice for All: Earl Warren and the Nation He Made liked the book and commented on NPR commentary by Nina Totenberg which was played. She stated that most of the controversial Liberal decisions (such as abortion) of the Supreme Court occurred after Chief Justice Warrens tenure under the Berger court and Richard Nixon Presidency, but not the Warren Court.
Next month we will review letters from Nuremberg by Senator Christopher J. Dodd. The book is based on the daily letters from his Father, Thomas Dodd, to his wife Grace during his eighteen month appointment as number two prosecutor to the Nuremberg Trials in 1945-1946. The letters had lain, undiscovered until 1990. The book goes beyond being a series of charming love letters or an attempt at damage control for his familys humiliation over Senator Thomas Dodds career-ending censure by the U.S. Senate in 1967.
Note: Thomas Dodd was charged and censured for converting and spending campaign funds for personal use. He subsequently died five months after his failure to be re-elected.
His daily letters describe the atmosphere surrounding the bombed-out city of Nuremberg his meetings and interrogations of the accused Nazi leaders leading to the convictions of all but three of the twenty-five defendants.
The book describes his growing suspicions about the motives of Americas World War II, Russian Allies which lead to his future hard-line anti Communism.
The Author justifies the adherence to the principal of fairness in the War Crimes Trial on two bases. First it brings to the attention of the public a complete record of the crimes against humanity and counters the constant attacks by Holocaust Deniers who, incidentally, dispute some of the evidence presented by Thomas Dodd on You/Tube.
Christopher Dodd used his book during his brief try for the Presidency in 2007 decrying President George W. Buschs secret Tribunals and wiretaps without court authorization. . The Author states that by giving the defendants a chance to review all of the evidence to enable the accused to defend themselves the Allied Court at Nuremberg took the high ground so that the term Nuremberg has stood for over sixty years as a symbol of United States fairness and Justice, unlike the term Guantanamo which has come to signify the abandonment of such commitment and we are now associated with George W Bush and secret tribunal.

ACCESSIBLE WORLD PRESENTS A JOURNEY THROUGH HISTORY ON AUGUST 2ND 2011
NEWSWIRE:
Last Tuesday the History Group reviewed Bernard Cornwells history novel Agincourt and listened to portions of three in-depth interviews with the author. Everyone seemed to like the book despite the violence. The descriptions of life in thirteenth century England and France were appreciated and most people did not mind the graphic battle scenes although some appreciated being guided around the rape scene in Chapter One. The song Agincourt
by Ken and Lisa Theroit in their Album Human History was enjoyed.
It was announced that we would skip our July gathering and meet again on August 2nd.
Our book for August will be the Bestseller Last call: the rise and fall of prohibition BY Daniel Okrent which is the basis for Ken Burns PBS documentary on Prohibition.
The Noble Experiment or Eighteenth Amendment obstensively designed to cope with Americas serious and long-standing problem with alcohol according to Okrent was in reality motivated by xenophobic fear of the growing power of immigrants from Ireland, Central and Southern Europe; virulent racist fears of the black man, and extreme anti-German hysteria during World War I. The author traces the temperance movement from the 1840s with its cast of colorful characters from Carey Nathan to Jane Adams. He explains how the Eighteenth Amendment, which never had more than ten percent public support, was passed by the heavy drinking state and Federal legislators because of the manipulations of Wayne B Wheeler the most powerful lobbyist who controlled six congresses and two Presidents and both parties.
Wayne B. Wheeler of the Anti-Saloon League (ASL) said that he didnt care what legislators drank, only how they voted and prayed. So when the Amendment passed in 1920, its enforcement collapsed like a house of cards. For Example, Alcohol was served during White House poker games by Mrs. Harding to the cabinet members responsible for enforcement of Prohibition.
The nineteen hour long book is historically accurate and chock full of witty anecdotes and quotable quotes.
Last call: the rise and fall of Prohibition / Daniel Okrent 19 hours, 43 minutes: DB 71547
Narrated by: Barry Bernson. 19 Hours 43 Minutes 2011
