Subject: [Missouri-l] Pie Throwing
As the Executive Director, I feel it is my duty to weigh in on this issue.
My thoughts are that this is a very bad idea on many levels.
First, the venue is wrong. If this was being held at an MBC picnic or MCB
carnival, I could understand it as those are much more casual occasions. A
convention with a business meeting just is not the place for this type of
activity to take place. I feel that a certain level of decorum needs to be
maintained at this type of organizational event, and pie throwing does not
come up to that level.
Second, there are many liability issues involved, both injury and property.
The potential for injury is great. Someone could step in pie or whipped
cream, or whatever, or even an empty plate on the floor and fall and sustain
an injury. Or they could get a cut on the face from a sharp edge-even paper
plates can cause paper cuts. Clothing could get ruined or at least messed
up. Even with plastic on the floors, people could track the mess out into
the hall and soil the hotel's carpets. These are just a few things that
could go wrong. I could go on and on.
Finally, physical activities like this that begin as good-natured fun can
often go awry and turn into something more personal, and someone ends up
getting hurt.
In closing, I do understand the desire to raise money. Certainly MCB needs
to find ways to raise funds just as desperately as its affiliates need to
find ways to raise funds. I would like to think, however, that a more
appropriate activity could be found. To that end, I am speaking out
strongly in opposition to holding this type of activity at the MCB Annual
Convention.
