Dear Colleague,

I am Karen Myers, a professor at Saint Louis University.  I am the Principle
Investigator of the study, Disability Identity Development of Individuals
with Visual Disabilities.  The study, which focuses on individuals ages 12 -
90 who self-identify as blind or having low vision, consists of a short
25-item survey with non-sensitive questions reflecting the person's
development and skills. The survey may be completed online, by phone, or in
person through October 15, 2010.

Please identify individuals in your organization (yourself or others) who
fit the criteria and might be interested in completing this survey, and
forward this message to them.  If you identify individuals who meet the
criteria but who may not have access to email, feel free to print out the
statement and provide them with a hard copy and/or read the statement aloud
to them. They may contact me directly if they wish to complete the survey by
phone or in person.

STUDY RECRUITMENT STATEMENT

 

Karen A. Myers, PhD (Associate Professor, Educational Leadership and Higher
Education and principal investigator), Sarah Laux, and Sarah Murdock
(co-investigators) are inviting you to participate in a research study,
titled The Disability Identity Development of Individuals with Visual
Disabilities.  The purpose of this study is to determine the disability
identity development stages of persons who self-identity as blind or having
low vision.

Your participation in this study will involve taking an on-line survey
through the web survey program Student Voice that will take approximately10
minutes to complete.

 

The risks to you as a participant are minimal.  These include the potential
loss of anonymity.  We will take several steps to minimize this risk:
Responses will be stored in a database on the university secured network.
The database is password protected and data encrypted.  Data will be
accessible by the web master, principal investigator, and co-investigators,
and will be secure and password protected.  Since the data will not have
personal identifiers, no person can be personally identified.  Another risk
may be embarrassment.  Please know that there is no right or wrong answer to
any of the questions.

 

The results of this study may be published in scientific research journals
or presented at professional conferences.  However, your name and identity
will not be revealed and your record will remain anonymous.  Since the raw
data available to the principal investigators and co-investigators will not
have personal identifiers, any presented and/or published results will not
have personal identifiers.  Results will indicate only information related
to disability identity development of individuals with visual disabilities.

 

Participation in this study will not benefit you directly.  Your
participation may benefit others since the Information could benefit society
by creating an understanding of people with visual disabilities and more
positive perceptions and attitudes of disability-related issues. It also
might help the participating organizations in the development of future
programs and services.

 

You can choose not to participate.  If you decide not to participate, there
will not be a penalty to you or loss of any benefits to which you are
otherwise entitled.  You may skip questions if you do not want to answer
them, and you may withdraw from this study at any time.

 

If you would like to complete this survey by phone or in person or if you
have questions about this research study, you can contact Dr. Karen A. Myers
at 314-977-1976 or kmyers11 at slu.edu.  If you have questions about your
rights as a research participant, you can call the Saint Louis University
Institutional Review Board at 314-977-2029.
