+++ Tips & Tidbits from the Food Lady
Food Lady loves her new home and new town! What a change from no sidewalks
and country living! I can actually walk to my doctor’s offices and go get a
coffee if I want to. Hungry is just happy if I bring him home something
yummy to eat!
I have been talking with various blind individuals about their shopping
experiences and have found out some more information to share.
Some go shopping by taking public transportation or walking to the store,
and then asking for a customer service person to help them shop. This is
when they have just a few items that they can easily carry home. For more or
heavier items some call a taxi, when they are done, or arrange for
paratransit to pick them up. Many people have mentioned paying a person,
like a teenager, to drive them to the store and go around the store with
them to shop and then bring them home. This might be a great idea for some
of us who really want to know more information about the products we buy, or
be sure about what we actually bought. We all have funny stories about
ending up with wrong items when we unload our groceries, right?
A lot of people use the Internet to shop, which is what I do, for many
items. Depending on where you live, you could pay anywhere from $5 to $10
for a shopping helper. Also some areas have a local RSVP (retired senior
volunteer program) and they can match you up with a person who can take you
shopping, read your mail, and take you to appointments.
Your local churches sometimes have service and hospitality programs set in
place to help their local community with these types of things too.
If you have any ideas along this topic, please Email me and I will post them
in the next issue.
I have been asked to have people submit favorite recipes for me to post. How
do you feel about that? We can start next month. I can post a total of 5 in
each issue, and they will also be posted on the website. Please give credit
to the author of the recipe or list the website where you found it, or if
you created it, let us know.
I like to adapt a lot of recipes I find to my own tastes. This makes it hard
to know if it is truly my own or what. I try to state where I found the
original.
Sometimes I just make up stuff from my long history of working with recipes
and cooking.
This month I thought I would share the Pumpkin Bread recipe I made this past
Saturday, and it turned out oh so good!
Pumpkin Bread
Adapted from the one I found at Simply Recipes Food and Cooking Blog.
Double the recipe and make two loaves of pumpkin bread.
Ingredients
1 1/3 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
¾ cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 small can pumpkin puree, I used Farmer’s.
1/2 cup olive oil
2 eggs, beaten
1/4 cup water
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
½ teaspoon ginger
1 teaspoon cinnamon
¾ cup chopped walnuts
¾ cup raisins
Method
1 Preheat oven to 350°F. Sift together the flour, salt, sugar, and baking
soda.
2 Mix the pumpkin, oil, eggs, 1/4 cup of water, and spices together, then
combine with the dry ingredients, but do not mix too thoroughly. Stir in the
nuts and raisins.
3 Pour into a well-buttered 9x5x3 inch loaf pan. Bake 50-60 minutes until a
thin skewer poked in the very center of the loaf comes out clean. Turn out
of the pan and let cool on a rack.
I baked mine for a whole hour, but I live at 3000 feet.
Makes one loaf. Can easily double the recipe.
Enjoy your yummy pumpkin bread and share with your friends and family.
Goes great with a cup of tea!
Oh and Hungry…He loves it too!
