FRIENDS OF WOLFNER HIGHLIGHTS
Volume 5-2: Spring 2010
A Message from the President
Dear Friends:
Thanks to all of you who participated in the annual meeting despite the severe weather. A special thanks to those who drove and made it possible for many of our members to attend.
I would like to thank all of the Board members who went off the Board this year: Melinda Cook, Debbie Musselman, and Willa Patterson. Special thanks to Barbara Sheinbein for her leadership the past two years as President.
Welcome to the newly elected who will serve two-year terms: Board members Rhonda Dycus, Donna Neal and Deanna Noriega. Joe Dobbs was re-elected for a two-year term. Board officers elected for a one-year term by the Board were: Karen Skender, President; Joe Dobbs, Vice-President; Rhonda Dycus, Secretary; and Fran Benham, Treasurer.
Missouri author and Wolfner volunteer, Charlotte Hubbard, shared her story as a published author in popular magazines and in novels. Through the local recording program she has recorded her four novels in a historical fiction series for Wolfner patrons. The series features wonderful characters as they deal with the life and death trials and tribulations of the early settlement of Kansas. A lively discussion about Charlotte's stories followed her formal presentation. All four books will be available soon on digital cartridges. Having read A Patchwork Family, I can hardly wait for the rest of the series and heartily recommend them to all Wolfner patrons.
Finally, my leadership of the Friends this year will be focused on building our membership base. Please help in this important work by recruiting one or more members this year. Karl Cook won our contest to recruit new members this past year. The contest has been extended for this year. Please read about the rules for the contest in this issue and get involved. Let's see if we can't double our membership this year.
Respectfully yours,
Karen Skender
Missouri Book Recording Program - by Fran Benham
State Librarian, Margaret Conroy, introduced the Friends to Wolfner's recording program at our annual meeting. She noted the National Library Service program focus on a wide range of books selected to appeal to a national audience, while the Missouri program concentrates on Missouri subjects or on books by Missouri authors. Our recording program, under the leadership of Deborah Stroup, follows NLS guidelines and standards. The recording booth, developed with Wolfner Trustee donations, meets NLS requirements. Our readers volunteer their talent and time to provide us with great books. Each reader auditions and is invited to record only on meeting NLS standards. Wolfner patrons are amazed and delighted by the remarkable performances of these volunteers.
Over 2,000 titles have been identified as possibilities for the recording program. To date only some fifty titles have been produced. During the last several years, many changes in NLS recording have required adjustments in Wolfner's program. The big change, of course, has been to the digital reading machine and cartridge. Our recording program is making that change and soon will release twenty digital books. Some titles will remain on cassette for now. This issue includes a list of Missouri titles still on cassette. They are well worth reading for those still using the cassette reader. Over time they will be converted to the digital format.
One of Wolfner's volunteer readers is also a published author. Charlotte Hubbard of Jefferson City has published in popular magazines as well as in novels for the last twenty years. Her historical fiction series about the early settlement of Kansas and the West begins with daily life at a stagecoach stop and its surrounding community. It opens soon after the Civil War and follows family members for the next half century. It is a great read, especially so since Charlotte is a talented reader and especially enjoyed reading to Wolfner patrons. Charlotte's presentation to the Friends resulted in lively conversation. Those present were excited to know that she has recorded all four titles in the series and that they soon will be available. With Charlotte as an example of Wolfner's recording program, we can expect many more excellent Missouri books in our future.
Membership Challenge - By Karen Skender
Attention all Friends members! This year the number one priority of the Friends will be to increase our membership numbers. This is so very important as it has a tremendous impact on our ability to achieve our mission of enhancing patron services through donations to Wolfner Library. Please help us by encouraging others to join the Friends. Membership is open to anyone who is interested in the services of Wolfner Library even if they do not need those services themselves. In addition to those who are blind and visually impaired, please remember our organization also focuses with Wolfner Library on those physically handicapped persons who cannot handle regular print materials. We would love to see many more of those people among the Friends ranks. The member who identifies the most people who join the Friends will receive a very nice prize at our annual meeting in 2011. So please join in and let's make the Friends stronger than ever. Below are the rules governing the Membership Challenge.
· Each current member who recruits 2 new members will get a free 1 year individual membership beginning with the membership period of April 1, 2011.
· Recruitment of a Family membership will be treated as 2 new members as long as both spouses are new members.
· The contest period begins on April 24, 2010 and ends on March 31, 2011.
· Any member who recruits 5 or more new members during the contest period will also receive special recognition to be announced at the 2011 Membership meeting.
· Members who are on the Board of Directors as of April 24, 2010, will not be eligible for this contest for the contest period.
· The new member must not reside in the same household with the current member.
· Current members are responsible for attaching a short note to the new member's application with their name and telephone number for this contest. The Friends of Wolfner Library will not be held responsible for any missing recruitment information.
If you have any questions, contact any Board member. Take up the challenge!
Treasurer's Report - By Fran Benham
Wolfner Friends celebrated our digital transition by providing over $50,000 worth of digital cartridges and nearly $5,000 worth of digital cartridge mailing containers to help Wolfner record as many books as possible for patrons with the new readers. Of course, the Friends also supported the Summer Reading Program, Staff Appreciation and Recognition, the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, and other programs. We donated more than $65,000 to Wolfner to enhance patron services - the largest annual gift we have ever provided. We are beginning to recover some of our recession investment losses, but income from investments will be low over the next several years. Even so, we Friends will provide $11,600 for Wolfner this year. We expect and plan to be able to provide support for Wolfner for many years into the future.
Remembering and Honoring Friends and Loved Ones
Members can honor the memory of a deceased loved one with a memorial donation to the Friends. Tributes to honor a special person, event or anniversary can also be made. Such donations are tax deductible. They will be acknowledged to the donor and to the family or friend in whose honor or memory the donation is made. Please make checks payable to Friends of Wolfner Library, and in the note line at the bottom of the check please indicate memorial or tribute with the name of the person to be honored. This is a way individuals and groups can pay tribute to special people while also helping to enhance the patron services of Wolfner Library. Checks can be mailed to the Friends at the address indicated at the end of this newsletter.
