JVIB and COSB Form Information Partnership
In recognition of the critical importance of the Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness (JVIB) to the field, the Council of Schools for the Blind (COSB) has provided the journal with a generous supporting grant for the 2010 calendar year. In addition, COSB and AFB Press have partnered to enhance COSB staff access to the journal by providing staff subscription discounts. JVIB readers will also benefit from the arrangement, as the journal will include COSB news of interest to educators of children who are blind or visually impaired in future issues. "The COSB Board recognizes the important role of high quality research in helping teachers support their students," said COSB President, Stuart Wittenstein. "Our relationship with JVIB will not only benefit the professional development of our membership, it also underscores the importance of the journal to professionals, and the need for our field to work together to support the advancement of scholarly knowledge."

New Edition of Foundations of Low Vision Dedicated to Alan Koenig
Drs. Anne L. Corn and Jane N. Erin, editors of the newly released second edition of Foundations of Low Vision: Clinical and Functional Perspectives, have dedicated the new edition to Dr. Alan J. Koenig, co-editor of the 1996 first edition of the book. When Dr. Koenig began work on the second edition, he envisioned a comprehensive and up-to-date text that would help professionals provide people with visual impairments with the best opportunity to achieve their potential. Although he was only able to participate in the early stages of the revision before his untimely illness and death in 2005, he left behind a legacy that influenced everyone who worked on the second edition. "Foundations of Low Vision was and continues to be a groundbreaking text in the field. It advances the understanding of the importance of the functional as well as the clinical implications of low vision and has influenced professional thinking on how services are provided today," said Natalie Hilzen, Director and Editor-in-Chief of AFB Press. "This dedication recognizes Alan Koenig's tremendous contribution to the field through a work that will continue to prepare professionals in the field of blindness and visual impairment for years to come. Anne Corn, a world-renowned expert on low vision, and Jane Erin, one of our most respected educators, deserve everyone's thanks, as do all the contributors, for providing practitioners with this invaluable resource. "
The NEW, second edition of Foundations of Low Vision is available for order now in the AFB Press online bookstore.

AFB Press Attends Assistive Technology Industry Association (ATIA) Conference
Congratulations to Julie Flanagan from the DeKalb County School System in Stone Mountain, Georgia, winner of an AFB Press Gift Basket given away in a drawing at the recent ATIA conference held in Orlando, Florida. The basket included a copy of the book Assistive Technology for Students Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired: A Guide to Assessment, a copy of the recent JVIB Special Issue on Literacy, and a copy of the book To Love This Life.

AFB Press and Web Programs staff enjoyed the opportunity to meet with educators and AT specialists at the AFB booth. Visitors included a group of seniors from the Village on the Green retirement community in Longwood, Florida. They were able to learn more about AFB's Senior Site and AFB books and videos for seniors experiencing vision loss.

While at ATIA, AFB presented the 2010 Migel Medal to Deane B. Blazie. The AFB Migel Medal - the highest honor in the blindness field - was established in 1937 by the late M.C. Migel, the first chairperson of AFB, to honor professionals and volunteers whose dedication and achievements have improved the lives of people who are blind or visually impaired. Deane Blazie is an electrical engineer and developer of the Braille 'n Speak, the world's first notetaker with braille key input and speech or data output.
Read an interview with Blazie as featured in the very first issue of AccessWorld®.
