Subject: [Modisabilaw] Hearings Next Week
The Senate will hold what should be some interesting meetings on Tuesday morning. They will break up into working groups with the assigned task of each coming up with five ideas on how to remake Missouri government. For the past week, the Senate website has had a "rebooting government" section where citizens could send in ideas on how to make government smaller. Several hundred budget cutting ideas were sent in and will be passed out to the working groups.
The goal is to come up with around $500 million in cuts from the proposed 2011 budget. The groups will be meeting at 9:00 on Tuesday, March 23rd. Among the groups that might be of particular interest for individuals with disabilities are:
a.. Education Work Group, David Pearce, Chair - Meeting in the Senate Lounge.
b.. Social Programs Work Group, Scott Rupp, Chair - Meeting in the Bingham Conference Room.
c.. Tax Structure Work Group, Tom Dempsey, Chair - Meeting in Room 326, Senator Shield's Office.
HB 1737 - Universal Design in Affordable Housing Act.
Rep. Storch
On the House side, Rep. Storch's bill is scheduled for a hearing on Wednesday, March 24th at 5:00 p.m. in the Senior Citizen Advocacy Committee in Hearing Room 1.
The bill would require that certain universal design standards would have to be followed for the construction and rehabilitation of "affordable housing units".
"Affordable housing units" are defined in the bill as a residential structure in which a person earning no more that 115% of the county median income could afford if spending up to 29% of his or her gross annual income on the housing. The bill sets up specific standards for different elements of the home and prohibits exceptions to four basic elements: one no-step entry; minimum floor and hallway width requirements; provisions for usable bathroom facilities; and at least one bedroom on an accessible level connected to an accessible route.
HB 1311 - Health Insurance Coverage of Autism
Rep. Scharnhorst
The bill was referred today to the Senate Small Business, Insurance and Industry Committee. A hearing date hasn't yet been set. The bill has passed the House.
