What is it like to live in a cold, snowy climate? Many of us think we know.
Although we may have to hole up for a day or two during the worst winter
storms, that is a state we know will end soon. Life is very different for
our guest this evening, Karen Delzer. Raised in Southern California, she
moved several years ago to North Dakota with her husband Curt to care for
his father during his last years. Nothing in life thus far as she had lived
it prepared Karen for North Dakota winters. The word had an entirely new
meaning and is beyond anything she could probably have imagined. It
means being inside for weeks or months on end. What is it like for a
Californian to experience the severity of this extreme weather? How does
she deal with being inside for so long at a time? What preparations does she
make? Are there special considerations that must be taken before going
outside? What other adjustments did she and Curt have to make in order to
adapt effectively to this way of living?
Karen will answer these and other questions tonight on Books And Beyond. For
six years, before moving to North Dakota, she worked as Executive
Coordinator for EYE-DAS,
a non-profit organization assisting the blind and visually impaired. Karen
has worked as a medical transcriber, does some audio editing, enjoys
reading and running email lists and making home health care products for
friends and family. The mother of two grown sons, she and Curt have been
married for almost five years.
