I just wanted to give you the highlights of this weekend's MCB board
meeting.
We began on Friday evening with a parliamentary procedure
training session conducted by our parliamentarian, Virginia Berberick. She
did an excellent job and it was very informative. I heard several good
comments from those in attendance.
Also on Friday evening we heard reports from several
committees. Reports included the Adaptive Technology Grant by Franklin
Johnson, Youth Services by Linda Gerken, Youth Conference by James Hollins
and the Blind Pension by Chip Hailey.
On Saturday morning we began with my report and in this
report I informed the board about a workshop I attended this past week.
This was a press release writing workshop and I learned a lot of valuable
information that I am willing to share with any affiliate that would like to
have it. If your affiliate has a public relations officer please have them
to contact me or if you don't have one, then I encourage you to appoint
someone to fill that position.
I also announced that I had appointed Linda Burriss as the
Special Services Chair. The board approved this appointment with no
objection.
I mentioned also that someone had called the office this
past week and asked for their affiliate to use our tax exemption. I had
Betsy to inform them that we couldn't do this. Each affiliate needs to have
a tax exemption of their own. If something is being bought for MCB, then of
course our tax exemption could be used, but not for another 501 C3
non-profit organization.
I announced that Ardis Basyn will be our guest from ACB at
our annual convention this year. Ardis Basyn is the Membership Chair Person
for ACB and is an excellent speaker.
We heard a treasurer's report from our treasurer Danny
Wheeler. Our financial status has not changed much and be sure that there
will be some budgets cuts this year.
Kathey Wheeler was nominated for the ACB Life Time
Membership Award. Kathie was our president from 2004 until early2008 when
she became physically unable to perform as our president. Congratulations
to you Kathey!
We approved five members at large during this board meeting.
We heard several more committee reports including the
Henderson Management Company settlement committee by Franklin Johnson, the
Building Committee with Ronnie Jackson standing in for Charles Johnson, the
Membership Committee by Tom Jones, the Internet Committee by Beau Barnhart,
the Scholarship Committee by Dr. Jerrell Holt and the 401 Task Force report
by Patti Schonlau.
I gave a report on the New Thrift Store Committee and
announced that Mike Keller was going to be doing some research on the
feasibility of establishing our own thrift store. I will be working closely
with Mike over the next few months as we pursue this project.
Eldon Cox gave his Convention Committee report from the
results of the meeting that we had on Friday afternoon. The convention will
be October 9, 10 and 11. Preregistration will be $5.00 and on-site
registration is $10.00. The hospitality will be on Friday evening at a cost
of $5.00 and the banquet is Saturday night for a cost of $25.00.
That pretty well wrapped up the committee reports and I then
turned it over to the Personnel Committee Chair, Patti Schonlau. She gave a
report on the interview conducted with Mr. Bert Emmons followed by comments
by the other Personnel Committee members Chip Hailey and Franklin Johnson.
After their report I presented Mr. Bert Emmons to the board
and the guests. He fielded questions from the board for approximately one
hour.
We broke for lunch and when we reconvened, the board went
into closed session. Mr. Emmons was nominated to be our Executive Director
but the motion failed.
A motion was then made to have the Personnel Committee to
continue to search for an Executive Director. A survey will be sent out to
each affiliate asking for your input as to what you are looking for in an
Executive Director. When you receive this survey please take the time to
talk about it within your affiliate and then fill it out. The Personnel
Committee will allow approximately two months for you to return the surveys
and after assimilating the data retrieved, they will modify the job
description if need be and then continue the search for an Executive
Director.
That sums up the board meeting for this weekend. I probably
left something out and if it was really something important I will let you
know.
My thanks to the board for a job well done. I really
appreciate the cooperation I received from all of the committee chairs that
reported and from the board as a whole.
Also a special thanks to the Personnel Committee for the
hard work they put into the job they did.
