I am one of the Ambassador's of the Delta Independent Living Center in St.
Charles. One of our duties as Ambassadors is to go around to the different
businesses, restaurants, etc. and do a survey to see if they are ADA
compliant. I was at the city hall a few weeks ago, and we did one for that
building. It is amazing how many items are non-compliant. It is important
to let the management know if something is not accessible and should be.
Paraquad is involved also. That is why a ramp at a swimming pool is not
outrageous or ridiculous. Blindness is not the only disbility!! (Which we
all know)
Thank you for your emails, DeAnna. It is something for all of us to think
about.
Julie

Few cities have taken ADA guidelines and incorporated them in to their
building codes. Waiting for businesses or even city state entities to do the
right thing doesn't work. Just look at the lack of a shoulder to Missouri
roads. There is no bike lane or safe path for pedestrians to walk along
roads in Missouri. Although I only live two miles out of town on a county
road, I can't safely walk there along the county road because I would need
to use the edge of the lane where cars would have to swerve to avoid hitting
me. Braille signage was non existent or inaccurage in the Missouri Capitol
when I first started working there. Even with laws in place, there is no
action until we ask for it or the law has consequences. I know my views mark
me as a bleeding heart liberal, but I get so tired of being minimalized by
society because they don't understand my needs or those of other people with
disabilities. We pay taxes, spend our money in the community and want to be
part of our community.
