Delta Area :: March 2017By Wanda Matlock
Hello to everyone from Delta Area! Before you receive this issue of the MCB Chronicle, I am hoping for much nicer weather. I am happy to say that because of the hard work the Delta Area Members put into the White Cane Walk, we collected the most donations, therefore we won first place. I am very proud of the members of Delta Area.
On November 29, we combined our Thanksgiving and Christmas party at the China King Buffet in Sikeston, Missouri. We invited our friends from River City Workers and SEMO United Blind Club along with some other special guest. We thought we had a great turn out with 26 people in attendance. On December 6, only two of us were able to go to our planned outing to St. Louis, to visit and shop at the Service Club. We would like to thank Donna and Lisa for all their help. We also got to visit with other friends that were at the Service Club that day. After we went shopping, we went to Panera Bread to eat. It was a great outing.
We had our January meeting on the 24th. We are going to focus this year on trying to get new members to hopefully grow our affiliate. We have put ads in several of our local newspapers and are having some business cards printed. I ask that every Delta Area member invite at least one person to our next meeting on February28th. From our affiliate to yours; we hope everyone has a safe and happy Spring!
Hello to Everyone From Delta Area :: December 2016By Wanda Matlock, Presdent
The last couple of months have been very busy for the members of Delta Area. We thought that the MCB 60th anniversary convention was one of the best ever. The meetings were good and the vendors were very helpful in answering questions about many issues that affect the blind and visually impaired. The craft room was one of the best I have visited in a while. We would like to say congratulations to the new officers of MCB!
On October 15, several members from Delta Area joined the SEMO United Blind Club for the White Cane Walk. There were 25 people in attendance. The Mayor of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, Mr. Ed Degarius, read the proclamation and the president of SEMO, Tony Pickrell, did a demonstration of how to properly use the white cane. At 9:00 we started the white cane safety walk. After the walk, hats were given away and grab bags were passed out. We would like to say good job to Lee Young for his great organizational skills and a big thank you to the SEMO United Blind Club for allowing us to be a part of the walk. As president of Delta Area, I want to give all the Delta Area members a big pat on the back; everyone worked hard getting donations for the walk this year. I am very proud to be working with this fine group of people.
Our members have decided to combine our Thanksgiving and Christmas party together this year on November 29 at the China Buffet restaurant in Sikeston, Mo. We hope for a great turn out.
On December 6, we will be traveling to the Service Club for the Blind in St. Louis for a day of shopping and a great lunch.
On October 25, elections were held for Delta Area. The results are as follows:
Wanda Matlock, President & MCB Board Representative.
Tony Blurton, Vice President
Denise Reed, Secretary & MCB Board Alternate
LaWana Copeland, Treasurer & Strategic Planning Committee
Jim Taul, Education & Advocacy Representative
From our affiliate to yours, we wish everyone a blessed Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas!
Delta Area :: September 2016
Hello to everyone from Delta Area. It has been a busy summer for our members. On May 3rd, a group of 12 of us met at the Pizza Hut restaurant in Malden, MO. for a great buffet meal. This event was in conjunction with the ACB/MCB fundraiser. We hope it was very successful and that we can make it bigger and better next year. On June 25th we were invited to join the River City Workers for their annual picnic at the Cape Girardeau South Park. The park is very nice, and of course we had great food and some great entertainment provided by some of the River City Workers members. We would like to thank Sabrina Fowler and all their affiliate members for their hospitality.
On July 11th, United Way invited us for a lunch at Buffalo Wild Wings in Sikeston, MO. United Way has been a great supporter of Delta Area Blind for many years. As much as we like to eat, we also like to have fun. As I am writing this report, several of our members are getting packed up to go to Camp Cobblestone for the week. My Granddaughter is very excited! We are sad to report that we lost 4 of our hard working members. When I say this, I mean that they moved out of the Delta Area. This just means that this is great news for other affiliates that they will possibly join. We have also been working on ads to put into some of our local newspapers to try to get new members. We also have been discussing some fundraising ideas for the White Cane Walk in October and thinking about an item to donate for the MCB silent auction at Convention. Several of us are looking forward to attending this convention. We at Delta Area Blind hope everyone enjoys the rest of the summer!

I would first like to say that LaWana Copeland and Jim Taul gave a good report from the trip to Jefferson City for Legislative days. They both felt the representatives were very receptive to the concerns for visually impaired/blind people, and also for people with any disability. I attended Power Up in St. Charles, Missouri. I thought the presenters did a great job with their presentations. I especially enjoyed the presenter from The Hadley Institute, I learned a lot about i-devices. The lady that did the presentation on Dragon, did some great demonstrations of how to use the device.
On April 22 and 23, Judy and Steve Bryant, along with Wanda Matlock attended the MCB Board training/Board meeting. I actually had to miss the Board meeting, but Judy Bryant as the Delta Area Board Alternate did a great job informing me of the content of the meeting. By the time this issue of the Chronicle comes out, several of the Delta Area members would have enjoyed a great meal at Pizza Hut for the ACB/MCB fundraiser. I hope this idea is a great success and maybe we can make it an annual event. At our March affiliate meeting, we had a potential member visit our affiliate. I am happy to say that not only did he join, but his dad joined our affiliate also. Their names are Jimmy Reed and Jimmy Dale Reed, they both live in New Madrid, Missouri. Our members are also getting excited about camp Cobblestone in July. Several of our members have signed up for the week long session. Others are thinking about the extended weekend in September. The Delta Area meeting scheduled for April 26 had to be cancelled because of illness. We would like to extend an open invitation for anyone that wants to come to a Delta Area Meeting. Our meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 10:30.
We hope that everyone enjoys all the great activities that the Spring season has to offer!!
Delta Area News :: March 2016
Hello to everyone from Delta Area. We have been working on updating our bylaws for several months, and now I am happy to say that we have completed that task. As of December 22, 2015 we have a new junior member. Her name is Rilee Matlock, she is 12 years old and is in the 7th grade. Some of you might remember Rilee from Camp Cobblestone. We also had a potential new member visit our affiliate at our January 26th meeting. His name is Jimmy Reed and he lives in New Madrid, Mo. We will certainly be encouraging him to join our affiliate. On March 10, 2016 Jim Taul and LaWana Copeland will be traveling to Jefferson City, Missouri to attend Legislative Day at the Missouri Capitol Building. We hope the legislators will be receptive and join in our concerns for all people with disabilities. On April 22 and 23, 2016, Wanda Matlock, along with Steve and Judy Bryant will be traveling to St. Louis for MCB Board training and the MCB Board Meeting.

Hello to everyone, from Delta Area.
After a fun and relaxing time at Cobblestone Lodge in July, several members of Delta Area enjoyed a picnic hosted by Semo Blind Club at Whitley Park in Poplar Bluff. Thanks to all of the Semo members for making the afternoon so much fun! On October 1-4, several of our members attended the 2015 MCB Convention and Board Meeting in Kansas City. We thought the meetings were good and the presenters gave us a lot of useful information. Our affiliate is still in the process of updating our bylaws. It has been a slow process, but I am sure we will get there. On October 10, several Delta Area members traveled to Poplar Bluff for White Cane Safety Day. We joined Semo Blind Club for this event. There were several leaders from the community in attendance, such as the president of the Lions Club and the mayor of Poplar Bluff. We also had a police escort for the walk. Mr. Lee Young was the captain for the White Cane Safety Day walk, and he did a great job planning this event.
We have also been busy planning our holiday events, and again this year we plan to adopt two families for Christmas. Our Christmas luncheon will be held on December 10 at the China King Buffet Restaurant in Sikeston.
From our affiliate to yours, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Delta Area News :: September 2015
On May 26, we had our monthly affiliate meeting. We are in the process of updating our bylaws. We have also been reviewing applications for the Lola B. Garner Scholarship Grant.
At our June 23 meeting, we had a special guest. The MCB President, Denny Huff, along with Darren and Carla Bone made the trip to Southeast Missouri. Denny gave the members an MCB update and answered various questions. Several members were interested in Denny’s i-phone so he gave us a short demonstration. After the meeting, several members along with Denny, Darren and Carla Bone went to Lambert’s restaurant for some of those delicious throwed rolls. We at Delta Area would like to thank Denny for his interest in Delta Area and extend an open invitation for him, Darren and Carla to come back again anytime.
On June 27, Delta Area Members were invited to River City Workers annual picnic. We met at the Cape South Park in Cape Girardeau, Mo. We had a great day visiting with the Cape group along with members from Poplar Bluff and our President, Denny Huff, his driver Darren Bone and his wife Carla. We would like to thank the River City Workers for an awesome day of food and fun!
Several Delta Area members are getting excited about going to camp in July. As I am writing this report, I am counting down the days until I can relax at Camp Cobblestone. Our members elected not to have a meeting in July because the meeting date fell in the week that several members will be gone to camp.
Our next meeting is scheduled for August 25 at 10:30. We hope everyone has a safe and happy rest of the summer!
Delta Area News :: June 2015
Hello to everyone from Delta Area. We had to cancel our affiliate meeting in February because of bad weather, but had a great meeting on March 24. Chris and Marvelena Gray were our special guests. Chris talked about the Warren County DFS office being the designated office to handle the Blind Pension issues and he thought that was a good change. After our meeting, we had a great lunch at Lambert’s restaurant. We appreciate Chris and Marvelena making the trip to Southeast Missouri and invite them to come back again.
On March 31, Jim Taul and LaWana Copeland traveled to Jefferson City, Missouri for Legislative Day. They spoke with several Representatives and found them to be both receptive and supportive of issues concerning blind and visually impaired people in Missouri.
Three members of Delta Area attended the April 18 MCB Board Meeting in Kansas City, Missouri. We had great weather to travel and even though it was a long drive, we thought the meeting was very productive.
We had our monthly affiliate meeting on April 28. Several members are signed up and getting excited about going to camp Cobblestone in July. Others are thinking about the weekend in September. We are glad to see some of our new members going to camp this year.
We would like to ask for your thoughts and prayers for two of our members. Tony Blurton and Andrew Ormsby are both recovering from surgery. They are both doing well at this time. From our affiliate to yours. Have a great summer!

We at Delta Area have been very busy as usual. Jim Taul, LaWana Copeland and Wanda Matlock enjoyed the weekend camp in September at Cobblestone Lodge. Judith and Stephen Bryant along with Wanda Matlock attended the October MCB convention. We thought the meetings were great and the hotel and staff were excellent. We would like to say congratulations to the newly elected officers of MCB.
The members of Delta Area would like to announce the winner of the Lola B. Garner scholarship, his name is Hunter Cook. He is very deserving of this scholarship and we know he will put this money to good use.
We had our monthly meeting on Monday, October 27. After our business meeting, we celebrated October Birthday’s and had a celebration for our November, 2013 member of the month winner, Anthony Blurton. We also planned a trip for the 25th of November to go to the Service Club to do some shopping and for lunch. Elections were also held on Monday and the results were as follows:

- Vice President: Anthony Blurton
- Secretary: Kandy Goosens

Hello to everyone from Delta Area.
On November 19th, our group enjoyed a trip to St. Louis to the Service Club for the Blind. We would like to thank the Service Club for helping us do our shopping. The staff and volunteers were so kind to help each of us find things that we were looking for. We are planning to make this an annual event. Oh yes! The cookies and coffee were awesome.
We had our Christmas party on December 16th at the China Buffet in Sikeston, Missouri. We were so glad that several members of River City Workers of the Blind could join us for our celebration.
Each year we at Delta Area try to adopt a family for either Thanksgiving or Christmas. This year we adopted a family of five for Christmas. We bought gifts for the children and helped out with their Christmas meal.
We would like to take this opportunity to recognize one of our long time members for being chosen as member of the month for November, 2013. Anthony Blurton is also our Vice-President. We are proud of you Tony.

Hi everyone, the members of Delta Area had a busy summer. We were invited to River City Workers annual picnic on June 15th at Cape Girardeau Park. Several members went and we enjoyed lots of good food, socialization and a MCB update by Patti, the MCB president.
As I am writing this report for the chronicle, six members of Delta Area are getting ready to go to camp. We are looking forward to a great week. Also, my granddaughter, Rilee Matlock, will be joining us at camp. The members of Delta Area are also planning to have a booth at the Kennett county fair in late September. We hope to gain new members for Delta Area and promote MCB.

Hi everyone, we have been busy at Delta Area with our first fundraiser for the year. We decided to have a 50/50 drawing. Everyone was excited and worked very hard to make it a success. We also are in the process of accepting applications for the Lola B. Garner Scholarship. Mrs. Garner was one of the founding members of Delta Area back in 1982. We are proud to keep her memory alive with this scholarship. The goal of Delta Area, when funding permits, is to give the scholarship to a blind or visually impaired individual that is going to college or continuing his or her education and is from the Southeast Missouri area.
There were three members of Delta Area that attended the Board training and meeting in St. Louis April 5th and 6th. We all thought the training and meeting were both educational and informational. We would like to thank the convention committee for a job well done. Delta Area members have also been busy getting applications ready for summer camp at Cobblestone Lodge. We have five members planning to attend the July session.
